This hybrid canoe/kayak…

This hybrid canoe/kayak being a open bow and stern design along with a comfortable seat has to be anyone’s choice. I had my FX 12 for three years and it has provided enough fish to fill it completely up. I am completely satisfied no doubt very well designed.

I recently sold off my 06' Ultimate 12 and immediatly regretted it. I have other kayaks and canoes but I found over my 12 years of ownership that this hybrid design and light weight fill a void between in the fleet. I found a leftover Ultimate 12 FX last year and decided to give it a try. This boat is everything the origonal Ultimate was famous for but with significant improvements. Most noteably, the wider floor and greatly improved seat (comfort and adjustment) make it a more comfortable and versitile boat. The accessory rails are nice but I don't use them much and they have a propriortary slot size. Besides, I want to keep the boat light. The boat fish's great in small & sheltetered waters as did the origonal U12. On the down side Native seems to have forgotten this model when it comes to accessories and outfitting. No factory/ custom storage, no spray skirts and or coolers like there used to be ( and nothing I tried from their other models fit.) If you want add on's , your on your own to design/fit. My only other complaint is that the hull seems to scratch very easily. It's not a problem but it's a shame to scratch up a $1000+ boat at an acelerated rate.

Submitted by: TML on 6/4/2018

I have paddled the Native Ultimate FX 12 in the past and decided to purchase one recently because of the open design and high comfortable seating. I have a bad back and comfort is now my top priority. I do not fish and so I removed all of the tracks and rigging to lighten the kayak up a few pounds. I do like to occasionally stand to relieve back stress and this kayak allows this easily. Standing stability is good but not great. Seated stability is great at the high or low position. The kayak is very responsive and quick to reach top hull speed. It has decent glide but will turn when you stop paddling. It turns and maneuvers very easily. It snakes when paddling hard but can be controlled with easier paddling. I soon will be attempting to add a diablo paddlesports skeg to help with tracking performance. I demoed an FX12 in the past with a rudder and it had too much stiction in the footrests and was not pleasant to use but did help a bit in tracking. Overall the kayak is roomy, light, comfortable and performs better than you would expect- it's much faster than other standable kayaks.

Submitted by: GeorgeCCook on 11/13/2014
I recently replaced my 2008 Ultimate 14.5 Solo with a new Ultimate FX12. At 77 years young my aging back had gotten to the point of rebelling a bit whenever the 14.5 had to be lifted onto my trailer or transported to the water. The FX12 is a perfect boat. After being accustomed to the longer Ultimate I was a little skeptical that the shorter length would seem squirrely and that has not been an issue at all.

I am really impressed by the hi/low seat and the ease in which it can be removed for transport. The under seat tackle tray holders are so easy in keeping gear close at hand. I use one for casting tackle and the other to house my fly gear. I purchased the optional front hatch cover which is a great addition to the kayak both in looks and keeping spray out of the forward hatch area. The versatility of the anchor trolleys and gear tracks are a great improvement over those that I had to add to my old Ultimate. I did add an additional short section of Yak Attack track for mounting my VisiCarbon flag/light mast and am considering purchasing a waterproof bag for the rear open area to house all of the additional gear that I like to carry with me just in case I need it.

I may be a little biased because of my previous Ultimate ownership and the fact that both my Bride and daughter also paddle Ultimates, but I am convinced there is no better kayak available for general all-round recreational and fishing use when comfort, stability and flexibility are taken into consideration. These are great boats!
