I have had this boat for 5…
I have had this boat for 5 years now, taking it out several times a year almost exclusively on rivers. It was my first canoe and was a great entry level boat. Extremely durable, for impacts and dragging. However it did suffer a pretty bad “gas can” to the base one sunny day while on my roof rack. Not great in the wind or with three adults in it. It did handled way better after I spun the seats around to face the back trimming the boat to be more back heavy, originally it was very front heavy. (I think they were installed backwards at the time of manufacturing). I also moved the center bench back about 6 inches . So I could use it as a foot support and get more power while seated. Handled over-night, multiday trips great while fully loaded. The 4 rod holder make nice tie down points for all the gear. Took it through some class I and II white water(unloaded) and although my wife got pretty wet it was very stable. The boat is very heavy at 90lbs and is a beast for long carries and just loading and unloading off the car. Need 2 people for all moves. For the price not bad value.
I own this canoe for one…
I own this canoe for one week now.. I like it but there are a few tips other or prospective users might find useful:
- take care when rooftopping it: the box says: before transporting first install the center console.. and that's true... it might even be better to reinforce the hull some more, maybe put a strap around it and do not tighten it too much.
- On a car, use roofrails and crossbars so that the supports are as far apart as possible.
- In contrast to what you might think, the central console with the cooler is not water tight. It fills up with a lot of water when you sink the canoe making it hard to get it fully floating again. I have just finished filling up the thing using waterproof isolating PE foam. No idea why Pelican does not do this.
- Canada and Pelican apparently use US style bolts and nuts. This means a european spanner set is more or less useless. Especially for fixing the two seats to the supports. 10mm spanner is too wide, 9 mm spanner can't fit. No one has heard of a 9.5 mm spanner round here. Ended up crunching the 10 mm spanner in a wrench until it took hold. Maybe Pelican could supply a fitting spanner for European customers.
