New River in Virginia

Trip Overview

USGS @ Radford, VA - Flow of 7000cfs.

Gage Height @ 3.8 feet.

We put in at McCoy and took out after the dam at Narrows.

This part of the river isn't the Whitewater that is found in West Virginia. It is still quite challenging and is about the most you want to do on rapids without wearing a helmet. There are numerous class 1 & 2 rapids along this stretch of river. On certain occasions with certain water levels, those class 2 rapids will become class 3 rapids. I highly suggest the use of a map & you should scout out rapids before tearing through them because you can definitely get hurt if you don't hit them right.

Caution aside, this is a beautiful stretch of river. Large and small mouth bass are all over this river. Bring your rod! It is fairly remote, not too many people, not too many boats.

Accommodations:

There are numerous campgrounds you can pay for along the river, but the best camping is found riverside or on small islands throughout this stretch of river.
