Kayak Fishing Vest

Kayak Fishing Vest Description

The Onyx Kayak Fishing vest is feature-rich but yet a great value! Designed with four different pocket designs and functions to hold your essential gear and keep you fishing longer. In addition to the zippered fleece-lined pockets and the zippered chest pocket, radios or pliers can slip down and clamp to the pocket/vest through the opening at the top of the pocket, to keep them easily accessible. The one-button push drop down tray pocket holds a small tackle box. A lash tab to hold a knife, whistle, etc. is also included and can also be used to hold fly fishing tippets, sunscreen, keys, etc. The six adjustment straps can be adjusted up or down depending on your activity or the heights of the boat seat or kayak. The high back of the vest does not get in the way of the seats and has mesh for breathability. There is ample drainage to keep the vest dry when not in use.

I've used this life jacket…

Submitted by: paddler2859920 on 5/17/2024

I've used this life jacket for several years kayak fishing in lakes and in the Pacific Ocean. I've been dumped a fair number of times in the surf and am able to just relax and trust I'll bob to the surface when the wave passes. It's a nice number of pockets to enclude some fishing items. I'd like additional pockets or bigger pockets but I'm not sure I'd like any extra bulk. It is a good design that allows paddling or pedaling my kayak without feeling like it's too cumbersome or that the back doesn't fit with the seat back. I'm able to fish without restricted movement. Because it has been used a lot and I like new gear I've started looking at new life jackets and have found there are none I'd rather have.

I discovered this vest after…

Submitted by: paddler2430742 on 11/15/2022

I discovered this vest after my first 3 years of kayaking. I have a beginners sit on top, 10’, sit on top Lifetime Kayak. I was using my usual snorkeling PFD but it was bulky, rode up on my back and I was constantly making adjustments to multiple hanging straps during strokes. After a bit of Googling and reading reviews, I made my purchase. This vest is so compact and comfortable. It eliminates all the loose and entangling straps and provides simple and unobtrusive adjustments that fit a wide range of body types and snugs you in the right places even for a mid weight 60+ year old make. I was also interested in fishing and this vest included a number of unique features for fishing gear and even included a drop down vest pocket that served as a shelf for maps, phone, GPS, fishing license, etc. It’s a very smart and well engineered product and I’m sure they designed it based on real life input. I’ve made several excursions on the upper Potomac and I am so pleased I discovered this product.

I bought the onyx fishing…

Submitted by: WildernessCafe on 7/13/2020

I bought the onyx fishing and kayak pfd from amazon. It is by far the best PFD I own. I have quite a few NRS, Onyx and some generic brands. I even have a few type V from mustang.

I like this one the best.

General construction...

Stitching is good, some single, mostly double stitched, seams are double. high denier fabric, heavy duty nylon belts, shoulder straps are adjustable and side straps are adjustable fits up to a 52 chest so pretty much universal.

Has 2 pockets on the sides for your hands (fleece lined) or to stash stuff, a vented pocket on the front with a closure above for a radio or tools or something else. I usually put a flashlight, sun block, and a clif bar. and a smaller pocket above that one where I stash a microfiber towel. the pocket on the left is designed for a tack case but i put my phone in a waterproof case there for easy access.

Ive never fell out of my kayak, but I decided to test it. The back is mesh so drys fast and stays cool when your paddling. the top of the back actually floats up to become a head rest when your in the water. It provides 16lbs of support so double the requirement to be a class III.

Its also certified in USA CG as well as canada and europe so great for travelling.

I love it.

This PFD is made with fishing in mind. I'm not a fisherman. But I bought this PFD anyway for my casual paddling. The pocket layout makes sense and works great. It's very adjustable and will even fit a big boy like myself.
