This is one of the most amazing, low-cost pieces of safety and survival gear that I have ever seen. ACR Electonics, a leading manufacturer of safety and survival products, produces the $9.95 C-Light. It is about five inches long and 1 inch wide, completely waterproof and uses 2 AA batteries. It has a 360 degree magnifying (lighthouse-type) lens which allows it to produce a light that is visible for several miles in all directions. It really makes me feel confident in the evening or at night when power boats are zipping past my kayak. It also has a front focusing lens that allows it to be used as a flashlight.
It is designed to be attached to a PFD, but Scotty makes a deck fitting with a detachable 20-inch aluminum pole that gets the light up off the deck and an up into the air where it can be seen in all directions by other watercraft. The swaying of the kayak causes the light to twinkle like a very bright star or flash almost like a strobe light. I purchased the Scotty set up (which includes the Sea-Light) for $19.95.
