    Baffin 1 Description

The Baffin is built for the rigors of rough seas. Its unique hull design provides paddlers with a lively yet stable boat compared to other Greenland style kayaks. The three models in the series are well suited for a wide range of paddlers who demand immediate control and predictability. The generous sized opening of the hatch allows paddlers to load up adequate amounts of gear for up to two weeks, while the day hatch keeps your essentials handy while on the water. The Baffin comes with a full complement of deck rigging and a comfortably outed cockpit.

My son used it and had a blast. Easy to maneuver, fairly easy to carry (weight wise) and handles like a dream. Don't live on the ocean but it's handles well in rapids and fast moving rivers. It's great for portages through Algonquin park, fishing and touring all the island there. Overall an excellent kayak

Baffin 1 kayaks are a smooth paddling kayak that is yet stable compared to others that you might use when in rough waters. They also have large openings hatches that allow you to put whatever is needed to stay dry and pack for an overnight stay on the shore. You can’t go wrong with a bath and they are comfortable stable and cut through the water using a V-shaped bottom.

Been using a P&H Capella for years, but borrowed a Baffin for a week long trip recently. A great boat for expedition travel. Fast and has excellent secondary stability. Handles heavy seas well. Would say a good boat for beginner or the expert. Hatches are solid and easy to handle. Really liked the skeg which handled any weathercocking with ease. Will definitely consider buying as the Capella is getting long in the tooth.

    Submitted by: paddler538722 on 8/5/2019

I think this Kayak is named perfectly because it reminds me in shape of the old Inuit sealskin kayaks of old! It is low in the water and has a great deal of final stability. Of course when it comes to boats, to have more of one experience, you much loose something somewhere so it is not quite as quick to turn as some boats however makes up to it in speed. It tracks amazingly well, moves fast with little resistance. It also carries a great load and I love the way it rides low in the water. I would say this boat would please any experienced kayaker because of it's handling ability and I would not hesitate to take it out on the ocean. It isn't as heavy duty tub as some boats so it also can be lifted on and off a car easily enough especially with a little help. I love pretty much everything about this boat and I have paddled more than a few in my day!

This is a sweet boat - fits well, turns on a dime and keeps up with the longer boats I used to paddle behind. Decent storage, although I'm more of a day tripper and am not much of a camper. Can't wait to take it to Turnip Rock!

Fast, Smooth and roomy. Used a friends and fell in love. Handles well in big bodies of water, slow moving streams and rolling Rapids. Easy rolls for maneuverability yet, sturdy enough for beginners.

I have had nothing but amazing experience with this watercraft. It is amazingly comfortable and it moves swiftly through the water with excellent aerodynamics. I would totally recommend this boat, as it is THE best boat I have ever owned. The price is totally worth it and I would not put my money anywhere else.

Cuts through water like a dream. Rented this badboy recently and took it too Silent Lake Provincial Park here in Ontario. It was such a smooth ride that I was able to get close to wildlife on the shore with out spooking them. 10/10 would recommend. Would love to have my own. Happy Rowing!

It is sleek and moves through the water like a hot knife in butter. It's light weight and easy for maneuvering in the water and easy enough to load on my truck. It's a kayaker's dream.

I like the Baffin P1 because of the slickness to it. I would like it a little more if it was a little shorter and not as long, but overall I think it's almost perfect for me! It's not too wide, yet has enough room. It also has good storage space for me.

    Before purchasing the Baffin…

    Submitted by: KBnova on 9/11/2018

Before purchasing the Baffin I tried on a lot of different sizes, models and brands. As soon as I took it out for a test paddle though, I knew it was the one. For perspective - I am 5'3" , 130lbs , intermediate paddler (although at the time I was a beginning paddler). This boat has been used mostly for east coast sea kayaking and more recently for lakes and rivers. It performs very well in all venues. There's lots of room for day trip gear, but a bit tight for extended trips. Nice dry, soft and easy hatches, simple smoothly operating 'dial-a-skeg', but the main selling point (with my smaller size) was the smaller, lower keyhole cockpit extending into a lower back deck. It's a very comfortable and stable boat while still being maneuverable. Skeg down for good tracking. Skeg up for play boat and rock hopping. Surfs well, rolls well and if the roll doesn't work out then the low back deck makes a cowboy self-rescue fairly quick and easy. I'd say the only drawbacks for me would be the weight (no way am I able to lift this onto a roof rack, but that's true for any plastic boat of this size range), and it weathercocks to a fairly high degree, especially in a following sea (which can be corrected somewhat with the skeg). I still love this boat and expect to have it until I can't paddle anymore.

I really like this product. The design is easily superior as is the color schemes. The length seems to make it good for lake, bayou, river and canal fishing. The design style makes the Baffin 1 lightweight and easy to manage or maneuver in any situation. I firmly believe that anyone who is willing to try the Baffin 1 will be extremely satisfied with it and recommend it as I have.

I rented this from a local marina and was surprised at how well it handled. I am not an expert at kayaking, so I was a little nervous. It was easier to handle that I thought it would be and we had a super time. Makes me want to try again soon.

    Submitted by: PaPaMuski on 7/31/2018

Relatively short but tracks well, stable but maneuverable, lightweight for a fiberglass but built sturdy. The Baffin 1 handles well in open water yet it is easy for an elder to lift onto a SUV. It resists damage during rocky waters or landings but is easily repairable should one push the limits too far. Modest price with great handling makes the Baffin 1 the ideal entry level kayak which will meet the needs of the paddler for many years.

    Submitted by: paddler451219 on 7/9/2018

Most kayaks in my area are meant for white rapid water. But I have to say what I find particularly stunning and amazing about the Baffin series is the ability to bring along enough kit for a couple of weeks. Often when planning trips I envision a more lengthy trip on mild rapids if rapids at all. I feel like this particular kayak would make for a perfect companion to my more expedition like plans of making my way down a long river with minimal rapids if any at all. More focused on the kayak trip as the experience versus the location alone. Being able to pull out whenever I want to setup a camp. Explore the area to suit my rockhounding adventures, taking out the fly rod, or just stopping for some general foraging. This would be the ideal kayak for such trips. Trips I would consider EPIC in duration and ability not just for the kayak in the water alone but also for what the Baffin series would enable along the shore as well.

Wakes? Waves? Wild Currents? Passes and shifting winds? Pssssh... With this baby, you cut through it all like a hot knife through butter. Fast. Quick response. Edges clean and flawless. Handles everything the ocean throws at you, even crazy black snub-nose dolfins who chase me in it give up. Lol!

Really, in my opinion, Boreal makes the best ocean going Kayaks. I've really enjoyed mine. I would recommend the Baffin series to anyone who wants to have a successful run with a great kayak on open seas, gulf, lakes, shores and anywhere where speed and confidence in your Kayak are paramount.

I bought a P1 (poly) last summer, and love it. It's a perfect size for a small person. It gives me great control. I can easily get back into my boat after a wet exit, so important as I am not a super strong person. It tracks well in a rear wind with the skeg down. The seat is comfortable, even on long paddles. Since we only use our 2 Baffins for day trips, the low volume isn't a problem.

I'm a big fan of this boat. Fast, nimble, tracks well, edges well, and the smaller p1 is a good fit for those of us on the small side. The lower back deck makes the cowboy scramble insanely easy.

Only things I would change.... the seat: Boreal's seat is good, but it could use some more adjustment options like the WS seating system, and the thigh braces could be more aggressive.
Overall though a great boat for smaller paddlers.
