Yellowwood State Forest in Indiana

Trip Overview

My son "Joe" and I took off early Sunday morning in search of water. We drove over to Lake Lemon. As we found a place to park and put in we ran into a guy pulling his yak out of the water. He told us the water was so choppy it nearly turned him over several times. He said we would be much better off to find someplace else as the water was way to choppy and unsafe for kayaking that day. So we drove off and headed to Yellowwood.

We arrived at Yellowwood and walked down the really nice boat ramp there to check out the water. It also looked a little choppy but do able. We had a blast! We raced across the lake and yes, it was a ride with the chopiness of the water, but the sun was shinning and we had a great time.

We spent about three hours on the water checking out the shore line. All and all it ended up being a good day to be on the water and we had a nice time.

Yellowwood State Forest is located in the rolling hills of Brown County, Indiana. The forests's 23,200 scenic, sprawling acres offer three pristine lakes, hiking and horse trails, abundant wildlife, and overnight campsites easily accessible to the public. With its close proximity to Brown County State Park, the quaint village of Nashville, IN, T.C. Steele State Historic Site, Monroe Reservoir, Morgan-Monroe State Forest, McCormick's Creek state Park and Indiana University, visitors can enjoy a wide variety of acivities.

A permit is needed for any DNR property in Indiana: cost is $5.00

Directions:

State road 46 west of Brown County state Park, turn down Yellowwood road, cross Salt Creek make a left and it will take you into Yellowwood State Forest.
