Ten Mile Creek in Pennsylvania

Trip Overview

Ten Mile Creek is a tributary to the Monongahela about 25 miles South of Pittsburgh. There is a county park there that maintains a boat ramp with docks and a picnic area with shelters and restrooms. A Washington County launch sticker is required for all boats using this ramp,canoes and kayaks included. It's only $7.50 and it is good for all Washington County boat ramps including Cross Creek and Cannonsburg Dam.

At the launch it is deep and wide enough for powerboats but if you travel upstream less than a mile the channel bed rises and it becomes broad and shallow with weeds and rock beds.

As the name implies Ten Mile reek runs about Ten Miles from where it dumps into the "Mon" but unless the water is really high it only offers 3 or 4 miles of water deep enough to paddle depending on how you measure it. In those high water conditions beware of strainers and debris.

I use this as an evening paddle to break the stress after a log day of work. Smallmouth, largemouth, and an occassional trout can be pulled from it's muddy waters. There is also a tavern with a dock and a full on Yacht club along the creek that cater to water bound folks. The people are friendly and it's a nice place to take novices for a first encounter as long as there hasn't been a ton of rain in previous days.

No camping facilities are available so it's a day trip only kind of place but if the family reunion is at the picnic shelter bring your boat and a paddle and enjoy. The launch is manned by a county park employee on Saturdays in the summer.

Directions:

From I-70 Take Rt 43 toll road south until it turns into route 88 and follow signs to Ten Mile County Park. It's about 10 or 15 minutes following along the Monongahela river headed south
