Paddling Proud Lake and Upper Huron River

Trip Overview

Short paddle on a small section of the Huron River that gets little attention but deserves more. Put-in is at Proud Lake State Recreation Area boat launch off Bass Lake Road. Rather than take the usual route west across one arm of Proud Lake, into Moss Lake and into the main line of the Huron River, this paddle takes us east across another leg of Proud Lake to the section of the Huron River that flows from the control dam at South Commerce Lake. It's a section that includes remote natural vegetation, wildlife and yes, a few homes. It's only about 1.6 miles each way, including the lake crossing, but a thoroughly enjoyable little paddle if you don't have a lot of time but need to get on the water for a bit.
