Governors Island in Prince Edward Island

Trip Overview

We started out to Governors Island on a rough day. We left from Stratford beach about 10 minutes outside Charlottetown. The swells were high and the fog was bad, but we wanted to go anyway. It took approximately 2 hours to paddle out to the island from the beach, which was approximately 3-4 miles. Once there, we saw approximately 100-200 harbor seals on the beach. There are seals on Governors Island most of the year (except winter) Skeletons of dead seals and many different types of hawks and eagles. The island is fairly small and can be explored in about and hour. After lunch the waves calmed down and the fog lifted, the paddle back was much easier. I rated this moderate-difficult because of the conditions we went in and the possibility of the weather changing so quickly on PEI, but on a nice day this is an easy paddle.

Directions:

Very easy. Take the trans Canada highway through New Brunswick to the confederation bridge. Continue on the trans Canada and go through Charlottetown to Stratford. Follow signs to Stratford beach.
