Big Raccoon Creek (Mansfield to Bridgeton)

A self-supported trip created by kayakingqueen

Trip Overview

Oh my!!! A beautiful creek stretch with great fishing. However, all the fallen trees and low water turned our supposed 4 hour trip into 6 hours and we didn't even make it all the way to Bridgeton (took out at the Iron Bridge just before). From Conley Ford Covered Bridge (half way) the trees took over the creek. We could get around, under or over them all but as it was approaching dark, the jams just seemed to eat up daylight. Great fishing along the first half. Caught many cats, sunfish and bass. Didn't fish the second half as we need to cover some distance to get out by dark. Needless to say that didn't happen. I will definitely do this trip again but will start way earlier in order to give proper time to fishing all the holes and tree jams. There weren't any real good spots to put in/take out in order to chop this trip up. You can put in/take out at Conley Ford Bridge but it would be a heck of a haul up the hill. I will post an update as soon as I try it again.

Safety Notes

Tons of tree jams. Take machete and plenty of lights and batteries. Definitely a day trip right now!!!

Conditions

water was about 6 inches too low. Cecil Hardin was showing 662 ft and coxville bridge (only other station on that stretch) was showing just under 5ft. Don't know how this is gauged. There isnt 18 in at Coxville so a little misleading.

Portage Notes

only had to portage around a couple of trees and across some really shallow spots
