Howell Island Conservation Area

Centaur Chute

Description

The Centaur Chute on the Chesterfield side of Howell Island is a body of water that has three rock (rip rap) dams and a causeway that keeps the water relatively still when the water level is not high enough to flow over the causeway - about 16 feet at the St. Charles gauge, 17.8 miles downstream. Higher than this can become dangerous as the water from the Missouri River flows over the causeway. The carry-in is 428 yards from the parking lot to the water. Depending on the water level you can put in on the concrete embankment or, if lower, on rocks on the southwest side of the causeway. You can paddle "upstream" to one of the rock dams and back for a total trip of about 6 miles. Kayak fishers like to fish downstream of the causeway although the put-in more difficult.
