Ghost Forest at Copalis

Copalis River

Description

About a mile upriver from Griffiths Friday State Park, this seldom used waterway offers a brief but very serene and beautiful paddle. Visit the ghost forest, an unusual geographic feature of the southern Olympic Pennisula Coastline. The river is passable beyond the ghost forest for another mile or so at high tides. Otters abound in the lower river. Launch from the state park at the coast or at Driftwood RV park if you are a paying guest. Caution: this is a slow, shallow tidal river with lots of slick mud along the banks and partially submerged wood snags and pilings at low tides. Recommended to launch and paddle at tides of at least 6’ or higher.
