Not sure why this kayak is…
Not sure why this kayak is designated as being discontinued but either way, I thought I'd post a review after spending 7 days on the east coast with this kayak.
Being 5'6" and ~150lbs, I was on the upper end in terms of specs and the fit was just right. Tight enough that I felt the kayak was an extension of my body but roomy enough that I didn't feel any discomfort.
The kayak was an absolute pleasure to paddle! The primary stability was surprisingly good. On par with my personal Delta 15S, which I found quite stable. The secondary stability was even better, which provided great confidence in leaning turns. Directional stability was also very good. Rarely used the skeg except for strong crosswind/currents.
Storage space was very good, although the hatch openings are quite small compared to some other kayaks. A front storage compartment would've been nice too.
To sum it up, I think I may have found my next kayak!
I love this boat. I have 3…
I love this boat. I have 3 kayaks, and this is my go-to boat for anything except the longest trips. It maneuvers easily with edging and proper strokes. I am on the taller end of its size range, so I removed the foot pegs, which would not accommodate me, and put a couple inches of closed cell foam on the forward bulkhead, where the forward part of my feet now rest, my knees comfortably hooked into the braces. I love the fit of the smaller cockpit, which makes the boat feel like an extension of my body. The forward hatch is bigger than the regular Explorer, and I hate boats without a day hatch. I have plenty of room for 2-3 week trips. This boat tours, surfs, and rock gardens, although the length can sometimes be limiting in tight spaces.
