Yahara River in DeForest

Trip Overview

Put in at the veteran’s memorial park. The bottom is deep mud, which made getting in my kayak a challenge. Not good for anyone with bad knees as there is a 2-3 foot drop to the river.
Saw many deer, including two sets of doe with a fawn or two. One pair was right in the middle of the river, and one mamma stomped and brayed as I got closer. Blue heron, green heron, mallards, muskrats.

Safety Notes

The river can be swift in places. I got caught between two or three rocks at various points and bottomed out several times.

Gear Notes

Swiftly precision 9.5 kayak

Conditions

Flowing water with vegetation. Mosquitoes were pesky.

Portage Notes

Many downed trees made the route challenging. The river goes from muddy bottom to rock at various points. Lots of long grasses near the surface.
