Wood River in Rhode Island

Trip Overview

Wood River is in the Arcadia Management area on the RI/CT line.

I labeled this a moderate/difficult paddle for a few reasons: The current is strong to fight upstream, and in some spots water is shallow and rocky. Probably should have portaged over it but we're thick headed and refuse to get out and walk when there is an inch or more of water to tread/hand walk the kayak through. :-) The currents also create cross currents in many spots throwing you into the shore which is mostly lined with thorn bushes...Ouch.

However, aside from this difficulty, it is a quiet, beautiful trip through an aesthetic and scenic river/woods. It is well worth the effort upstream to coast peacefully back with the current and enjoy the scenery.

In conclusion, it is a difficult paddle in most spots but well worth the effort. Be sure to brush up on edging skills, and be prepared for portage in some spots (unless you are stubborn like us). I would recommend a touring or better kayak that can cut water well due to the current, and definitely one that can take a "rock beating".

Directions:

Exit 5a off Rt. 95 then turn right onto 102, then right at the blinking light onto ten rod rd (165) and see signs for Arcadia.

Launches:

There are many spots to put in. There is a left off of ten rod rd that is labeled "canoe drop". Also, if you pass that turn left at the next opening, go down that road and there are a few lefts off of that down a dirt road that leads you to some good spots. I would suggest a more rugged vehicle due to the conditions of the dirt roads.
