Wood Creek Pond in Connecticut

Trip Overview

Wood Creek Pond is a nature lovers paradise. It is located way up in Northwestern Connecticut, and worth the drive from other parts in the state. There is a state-owned boat launch with parking for about 12 vehicles and a setting that looks more like Maine than Connecticut.

Wildlife abounds at Wood Creek Pond. Before we were there a half hour, we already spotted a bald eagle, a great blue heron, and another cool-looking large bird of prey that my friends and I couldn't identify.

The pond is small enough to be seen in an hour or two. The water is clean and cold with portions covered with lily pads. It is surrounded by Mountain Laurel and beautiful woods that look as if they were planted intentionally.

There are a couple of small islands where the blueberries will be ripe in a few short weeks, and the water is teaming with fish. Pickerel seem to be the most abundant species.

The bucolic setting of this pond make it one of the most special places I've ever kayaked, and I highly recommend making a trek to Norfolk for a 2-hour paddle.

Rt 44 North to Haystack Mountain State Park. Bear right on rt 272 (North Street). In a few miles you will see a boat launch sign - take a right at that road - boat launch/parking is on the left in a couple hundred feet
