Trip Overview

Weequahic Lake is in Weequaic Park near I-78 in Newark.

It's an Essex county park, but there wasn't much listed on their website. Found more information in the guide book.

I spent an hour and a half on the water. It's shallow and there is heavy plant growth that has taken over the half of the lake with the fountains. Stay away from that side. At one point I got stuck. I also encountered a group of large fish that seemed pissed to see me and approached the boat. I booked it. I did see a large family of Swans.

This is worth doing once if you live nearby and aren't afraid of Newark. There are plenty of Essex County police present. There is also a concert area and there was live jazz playing when I went that I could hear on the lake.

There are some guys that seem to hold court near the dock and they actually helped me launch my kayak and carried it to my car when I returned. They asked me if I was part of a team of ecologist that come to study the lake. Some homeless guy offered to lift my kayak on my car for cash, but I didn't have any. Plus this was my first time out on my new kayak and I've got to get used to doing it myself...

Accommodations:

The small launch dock is equipped with a ramp. There are some make shift logs and planks so you don't have to step in the water. Didn't see the restrooms, but be sure to go before you leave your house. Wouldn't leave boat unattended and there are people along the shore.

Fees:

No fees or permits

Directions:

280 to exit 13 First Street. Drive 2 miles down Bergen St. Turn Left on Elizabeth. Turn into park and park as soon as you see a spot. Dock is near entrance on the right hand side.
