Wallkill River in New Jersey

Trip Overview

The Walkill River is located in Sussex County New Jersey, running North from Rt23 near Franklin to the New York State border south of Middletown, NY.

The river is narrow, about 25 to 50'wide and 1 to 3' deep. It has a modest current, that allows you to glide along, or double back if necessary.

The Walkill Refugee center is located on Rt565, about 2 miles North of Rt 23. At this location you can obtain a map of the river, which will show you places to put in, and park your vehicle.

If you want, you can put in near rt23 and canoe several miles North, and get out near the NY border.

The trip is an easy 3 to 4 hours, with 1 or 2 modest portages around downed trees. Bring your fishing pole, you will have plenty of chances to fish, with small mouth bass in some of the deeper spots.

Northwest NJ, intersetion of Rt 23 and Rt565. 1 mile North of Rt23.

I recommend stopping at the Walkill River Refugee center for a map of the river.
