- Wallkill River in New Jersey
Trip Overview
This is a follow up report to my posting on the Wall Kill river. Traveling North past Bassets Bridge, yes the river flows North, there are 2 fairly substantial obstructions. The first is some quick water with very large rocks much to close together to navigate. There is an island in the middle. You can carry/drag your boat to the right of the island. Waters shallow and there's a fair amount of large rocks you have to drag or carry over. It's very doable, but a bit of a pain.
Second is a larger problem. About .5 mile after the island obstruction is more fast water with larger rocks. The water rushes over 1 large rock providing a good 3-4 foot drop off. The other side of the river is completely blocked by a huge rock. You would need ropes to lower your boat down. The banks are very steep and overgrown.
Not having ropes I didn't proceed further. Esp considering I was paddling back upstream to get to my car. All in all could both be overcome yes. But it's going to require quite a bit of work.
If you're looking for a relaxing float stick with Bassets Bridge to RT 565. Much easier run.
For those who missed my first Wall Kill report it's very easy to paddle up stream. I paddle this river often. Only need 1 vehicle as it's easy to paddle with and against the current.
Best place to put in is off RT 565 in Vernon. Take RT 23 to Franklin Sussex Auto Mall. At the light by the dealer turn Right onto 565. This is on the opposite side from the quick check. Head up 565 and you will pass over the river. About 1/2 mile after the river is parking on the right side of the road. It's a dirt lot.
I should keep this place a secret as I love the secluded atmosphere, but I feel I need to share.
Notes:
Lot of ticks in warmer months. Watch the tall grass.
River banks are very slick and muddy
Accommodations:
None really. Fast food and diner on RT 23
Fees:
No fees or permits. Most of the land is state park
Directions:
RT 23 to RT 565 (Google search Franklin Sussex auto mall for GPS). Once at the dealer head up 565. This is on the opposite side from the quick check. You will see tall grass and swamp on both sides of 565. Wall Kill is a few hundred yards up. 565 passes directly over it.
