Trip Overview

Another calm relaxing Kayak and Canoe day on the Kankakee. We put in at County Road 525 South in Laporte County. We parked at the Southwest side of 525 South and the River, but the access point is located on the Southeast side. This access point is not maintained and is narrow and steep and is not publicly advertised. The river gauge at 525 South indicated a depth of 2.5', and the river moves slow. It took 6 hours to float from 525 South down the Meanderlands Wetlands Conservation Area at US 35 (Total of 8 Miles). We stopped to eat and to swim once.

Wildlife on this undeveloped river was amazing. We ended up seeing 6 Bald Eagles, 2 large turtles, musk rats, and even a deer cooling off in the river. We also saw numerous red headed woodpeckers, lots of Cat Birds, and several Orioles.

Safety Notes

The banks are extremely steep from beginning to end of this section.

Portage Notes

There are 5 bridges you cross under along this stretch. There were no log jams or obstructions during our trip. You can easily see all of the bridges from the highways and roads if you wish to scout them out.
