Trip Overview

Launched from Rte. 70 for a 4 hour run into South Toms River at old RR bridge parking lot takeout. Limited parking and a small carry were required at launch. In the past, parking here was prohibited but the no parking signs have disappeared. The water level was adequate. This river usually has some interesting wildlife. In the past I have seen geese, ducks, herons, deer, turtles, and swans. This time, I observed a woodchuck, red-winged blackbird, goldfinches and various waterfowl. There is a lot of deadwood and plenty of switchbacks which require focus and maneuvering. Two parks line this river and it offers a mix of wild and developed areas with lots private property marked "No Trespassing" along its banks. An alternate exit exists near Rte 37 and the GSP opposite the hospital. This would reduce the run time by at least 30 minutes. The biggest drawback of this river is excessive litter. The best aspect is potential wildlife encounters. Happy paddling!
