The other side of Antelope Canyon

Trip Overview

This was a multi day camping trip paddle that started from the Wahweep Marina on Lake Powell. The Lake is really low due to drought so the put in is off the beach as the boat ramp was too high that it no longer reaches the water. The same was said for the other traditional kayak launch at Antelope point.

Starting from the marina meant a much longer paddle to reach Antelope Canyon. Plus, you fight the current of the same for a good part of it so it is a welcome sight when you finally see and enter the canyon.
Antelope is smooth water and a no wake area, if the big boats try to come in. Amazing scenery with soaring walls all around. The canyon isn’t all that long before you run out of water, and that’s where we decided to pitch a tent. As this take out area can be busy with paddle tours who combine a paddle with a hike up the backside of Antelope Canyon, it can be a high traffic area in the summer. As such, most others pitch a tent outside the canyon on the shores of lake Powell. There was lots of driftwood for us to make a fire. My buddy even did some fishing and was successful right from our campsite.
we did the hike the next day and then paddled around the Canyon some more and out into the lake to explore Antelope marina, and then out the day after. fun time!

Safety Notes

Putting in from Antelope Point can be treacherous as you have to hand, carry your kayak and gear down, slippery slope down from where the boat ramp ends. When I went, that boat ramp was 50 feet higher than the water level.
