Trip Overview

The Basin is an ideal location for beginner and intermediate skill level kayaking in a protected shallow bay with small islands and marsh area. The Basin is separated from the Cape Fear River by a rock wall called The Rocks. Most popular paddle is a simple paddle to Zekes Island about a mile away. It's also great to paddle around the marsh islands or continue from Zekes to the barrier island / ocean beach area about 2 miles from the put-in. Caution: Afternoon winds can get quite strong (with chop) and be sure to check out if the tide is coming or going. Paddeling around the islands and marsh areas can get difficult at low tide with mud flats and sand bars. Accommodations: Several kayak outfitters are located in Wilmington and Carolina Beach area. Directions: Located 6 miles south of Carolina Beach and a mile south of the Fort Fisher Historic Site and NC Aquarium area. Ample parking is available and access is from boat ramp or beach area near parking.
