Tawas River in Michigan

Trip Overview

A beautiful little river that I have driven over many times. The trip started at the public access on Tawas Lake. From the access site, it is best to go to your right (northeast) and get out into the main body of the lake and then go back to your left - southwest) to the river.

The Lake has a lot of cattails in it, but they won't effect your trip. Once you get to the mouth of the river, it is a nice easy 3.2 mile trip. The river can be shallow at times, but it should always be navigable.

There is a lot of wildlife to be seen. On our trip we saw beavers, ducks, geese, and plenty of fish. It took us about 2 hours to float down at an easy pace. The river runs at about 1.2 to 1.7 mph.

Directions:

Public access launch site: off US-23 North on Newman St to end, follow signs for public access site.

Take out: Junction of US-23 and 9th Avenue
