Swift reservoir WA

Trip Overview

Amazing night paddle on Swift Reservoir near Cougar WA. After a quick dinner at the shelter / picnic tables by the large parking lot we unloaded canoes and kayaks - the place was almost deserted due to the late season. Bathrooms near the covered picnic tables as well as water. we had a stiff breeze ( skier in water flag blowing fully at the end of the dock ) and some moonlight.
Our group paddled across the lake to a remote island campsite using Casseopia as our guide as none of us had ever visited the lake and we had no landmarks. We did bring a map and premeasured the distance and calculated how long it would take us to reach the island, based on the groups prior speeds.
it was spectacular - beautiful clear sky lit up with stars. Set up camp and had a peaceful chat with the youth.
next morning swam in the cove and had breakfast before heading out on a hike.

. Met a couple fishing at the boat launch who both scolded and coached us on boat launch etiquette- an interesting experience for our youth. On the ride home several of the teenage boys admitted they were a bit fearful as we struck out on the water and were pleased and proud they faced their fears and depended on their training & proper tools to accomplish the goal of padding at night with the stars to guide them.

Safety Notes

Carried safety gear lights on pfds and headlamps and glow sticks on each boat

Gear Notes

Cold gear bags

Conditions

High chance of rain - plan accordingly. We required clear skies as we used stars to navigate
