My Wife and I dropped in at the bridge over the St. Marys on Hwy 101 in Pleasant Mills, Indiana (1:30pm). This was the first trip for us with our brand new Old Town Saranac 146 Canoe so we brought some of our family with us to help see us off.
We had one portage around a log dam about 45 minutes into the trip.
We saw 2 Red-Headed Woodpeckers. One bird was about halfway through the trip, the second closer to Decatur.
We arrived at Kekionga Park (Southeast Decatur) around 3:40pm. My Sister and Brother-in-law delivered our truck to Decatur and my Nephew climbed in the Canoe and rode the rest of the way to the boat launch in the park. He only rode the canoe for about 400 yards, but he had a blast!
The weather was a beautiful sunny day around 70 degrees.
Overall, a nice quiet first trip for our canoe, there was very little current and not much maneuvering, so it was a good first paddle.
Decatur has many food places, hotels and shopping. If you need fishing/outdoor supplies, The Sportsman's Lodge is a good choice. Decatur's most popular restaurant is The Back 40, nice but pricey. If you head west out of Decatur on US Hwy 224 to Preble, Indiana, you will find Norm's Preble Garden - Great Food and you will get your money's worth - Come hungry!
