St Charles Bay Texas

Trip Overview

Launched at Lamar Beach Road, a kayak launch just north of Goose Island State Park. We paddled north along the shoreline. The tide was apparently just right for shorebirds as we saw many of them, some hanging out on duck blinds built out in the shallow water. We’ve paddled this area a number of times and never saw that variety and number of birds. I included some photos from other trips, one is a whooping crane. They’re not disturbed at all by paddlers. We paddled across the bay to the shoreline of Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. They were doing a large prescribed burn to create habitat for the whooping cranes which winter there. The wind came up quickly and we had to tack back and forth through 3 foot breakers coming back across the bay. Because we had no spray skirt and very little sideboard on our tandem inflatable, it made for a wild ride.

Safety Notes

The wind from the Gulf can rise really fast and push the water up the bay into breakers
