Sparks Lake

Trip Overview

Camped at La Pine State Park. Toured the Century Drive lakes to check out paddling conditions and camping options for a future trip. Paddled at Sparks Lake, but barely enough water to float a kayak this time of year. The water was deepest along the shores. We did not venture out to the South end of the lake. Further down the road, Little Lava Lake looks like a good place. The Deschutes River begins at this lake. There is a nice campground, with some spots right on the lake. A better choice than Lava Lake, which is known for being very windy. The wind does come up at all of these Cascade Lakes Highway locations, so it is best to plan your paddle for early in the day. Mosquitos are also bothersome from late Spring till around mid August.
