Trip Overview
I put in the kayak at South Fork Edisto River boat landing, aka Rocky Springs landing. Almost immediately began hitting downed trees. Huge trees, little trees, trees covered in poison ivy. Over 8 hours later and covering only apprx 4.5 miles, I set up camp. Woke up early and started paddling only to encounter more of the same. It was very exhausting. Felt less like kayaking and more like dragging my kayak over obstacles for 6-7 miles. I would estimate 30+ portages and I wish that was an exaggeration. The location is remote and absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately, I cannot reccommend this route unless 1) you're bringing a chainsaw and plan to clear the path, or 2) you're in search of a strenuous physical challenge. Be on the lookout for cottonmouths/water moccasins hanging and dropping from branches above. Also lots of deer flys and horse flys that didn't seem to be detered by insect repellant. Got out at Wager Rd which wasn't much fun because it has no formal river access but by that point I was done. Prepare to work hard if paddling this section.
