Snake River in Massachusetts

Trip Overview

The Snake River was a nice easy paddle from Lake Sabbatia in Taunton; lots of nature, a bit of noise from Rt. 495 but not bad.

We left about 1 pm and around 3 pm we had to pass some thick brush and down trees, the waterway started to narrow but we pushed on. We got to the point where the water disappeared, but it was too late to turn around as the sun was setting.

Around every bend we thought we were closer to Wennecunnet Pond where the 2nd car was parked, but the swamp got so bad we had to walk in 2-4' of swamp mud pulling our kayaks for hours.

Lots of cuts, prickers, and mud later, the water way opened up and luckily we made it back in the dark. If we had been stuck in the swamp in the dark we would have had to call for rescues because there would have been no way out and we were soaked. There should be warning signs saying spots are impassable before someone gets trapped or hurt out there. But if you like the survivor man stuff it was a adventure...
