Shenandoah River in Virginia

Trip Overview

We rented kayaks as this was a spur of the moment trip. They put us in at the public boat access near Rileyville, VA. River level was good. The Compton rapids were about a mile downriver. Easy class 2. The rental company has a camp ground right after. Easy portage if you wanted to do them again.

The entire trip was 12 miles which makes this a little difficult. The "Ledge" is about half way thru the trip. We had to put out to empty the kayaks. We had a few times of hitting bottom and once getting stuck. The entire trip was about 4 hours of good paddling. Weather was beautiful and sunny. Bring plenty of sunscreen and water. You can eat lunch or a snack in park owned land only. The put out was at the rental company.

Overall one of the cleanest and peaceful rivers I have ever seen. A true jewel of Virginia.
