Severn River in Virginia

Trip Overview

The weather was a very comfortable 75 degrees and sunny. We left John's Point landing around 11AM. The paddle out to School Neck point was relatively flat with about a 3 knot headwind. When we rounded Turtle Neck Point the wave action kicked up to 1/2 to 1 ft seas (we were in 12 ft Perception Sundance rec kayaks-no skirts)waves were a bit gnarly, so we headed for calmer waters by hugging the shore. The tide was still coming in and that was a good thing because the MLW for this area is 1/2 to 1 ft.

We had lunch at Mud Point on the edge of Caucus Bay which is abeam the Big water of Mobjack Bay. Did some beach combing and found a few miocene fossils.

Nature observed: Great Blue Herons, Pelicans, Bald Eagle, Ospreys, Turtles, many shorebirds. Headed back with a major tailwind and some nice rollers!

There is a grass and gravel parking area. There are no facilities and the launch area is river bank with some oyster shells and muck.

no fees. State maintained road and pier.
