Savannah River in Georgia

Trip Overview

This is a nice short day trip, you put in at the base of the Thurmond Dam and paddle down to just past HWY 28 (Furys Ferry). The first portion of the trip is on the Savannah River, you can see Blue Heron, Hawks and related critters. Make sure to take some time to take a dip in the river to cool off, and check out the old trolley that is frozen at mid river.

The second portion of the river comes at about the mid way point there is a chance to take a side trip down the Little River, you get to pass some small bridges, a train bridge (complete with kids jumping off the spans) and there is a nice area at the mouth of the Euchee Creek. Here you can see turtles sunning themselves, and some neat foliage. While the island (Germain Is) is being built up it is still enough "nature" to give it an "explorer) trip.

You rejoin the main river just north of the HWY 28 bridge, and it is just a short paddle past the HWY to the landing East side of the River (South Carolina).

The Thurmond Dam is just off the road from Leah, Georgia (HWY 221) the put in is just down from the dam (follow the directions to the Dam area south of the dam. The HWY 28 take out is south of HWY 28 It is the first major road after you cross the bridge from the Georgia Side (ALLEGEDLY STEVENS CREEK ROAD (SC).
