Round Lake and Anthony Kill in New York

Trip Overview

Headed out for Round Lake in the afternoon, on a beautiful Saturday! I tested out my newly inherited Indian River, fiberglass canoe. The lake was calm heading out with lots of Canada Geese on the marshy south shore. Saw a Blue Heron within minutes. A few kayakers and fellow paddles could be seen on the lake. I paddled along the south shore to the mouth of Anthony Kill. Anthony Kill is a slow moving marshy river that bends and meanders through lush vegetation for approximately 1 mile until you reach a beaver dam and must turn around. Call to attention: Just before the beaver dam you will come to a 3 way fork. You can take either the left or middle flows but the right flow is a dead end.

We didnt encounter anyone else while in the Kill. Saw more Canada Geese, a Wood Duck and most impressively a Blue Heron rookery. Counted about 23 nests and saw several Heron. On the way back we encountered two Jet Ski boats creating a moderate wake but the noise and smell was the most annoying aspect. They were soon forgotten when we practiced our swamping and recovery skills about 200 feet out from the shore and parking lot area. Great 4 hour paddle!

Directions:

Interstate 87 to Exit 10 Ushers Road. Travel east on Ushers Road to stop light at Rte. 9 Intersection. Turn north onto Rte. 9 and travel a few miles until you see the lake on your right. Parking lot and access just off Rte. 9.
