Root River in Minnesota

Trip Overview

We went from Lanesboro down to the first canoe access on the south side (right hand) off of highway 16 (about 3.5 miles). The day was misty and cold (as was the water).

Fished some of the rapids and picked up 6 trout (browns and rainbows some 16 inches, all returned) and one smallmouth. Water was low (2.4 feet) and we hit some rocks but did not have to get out and walk (we use a Sea Eagle explorer 380 2 person kayak).

There are some rapids along the way to make it a fun trip but easy enough for beginners. Of course the scenery along the Root River is spectacular. We dropped the truck at the take out and rode our bikes on highway 16 back to Lanesboro about 2.5 miles.
