The island of New Guinea sits just below the equator, bounded by the Pacific Ocean in the north and the Arafura Sea in the south. New Guinea is divided into two halves, the eastern part is the independent country of Papua New Guinea and the western half is known as West Papua, a region of Indonesia. It’s on the north-west tip of West Papua that the approximately 1500 islands that make up Raja Ampat are situated. The area is untouched and generally unknown, abounding in pristine tropical beaches, sapphire seas and one of the world’s most spectacular marine habitats. Marine conservation groups have estimated that the marine life diversity in the Raja Ampat area is the highest recorded on earth, making the islands an amazing destination for those who love the water.
Southern Sea Ventures offers three itineraries in Raja Ampat: a live aboard trip on a traditional sailing ship; a self contained paddle expedition utilising local homestays and the third trip utilises a support boat for transport around the islands. On the live aboard trip, you'll stay in air-conditioned private cabins on a traditional sailing vessel and explore the islands by kayak, visiting areas, quite possibly, where no others have paddled before. Paddlers on the Raja Ampat Paddling Odyssey explore the islands in their trusty kayaks and when not camping, spend four nights staying in homestays, getting to know the locals. On the boat-supported trip, you’ll travel a little further into the islands and explore the best paddling and snorkeling locations on offer. No matter what trip you choose, be prepared for amazing adventures not only in your kayak but also with mask and snorkel, discovering the real-life tropical aquarium that is Raja Ampat!
