Trip Overview

Launched from Southern Park, crossed the Potomac River to Colonial Beach and back, 12 miles 4+ hours. Sunny skies, 6 mph winds, 15 mph gusts, 1 foot swells and light chop. MD DNR lists the county-owned park as having a soft launch, but the county doesn't mention one. Went anyway to see what is there. Discovered no official kayak launch, just a 2 foot drop into a couple inches of mud. Tidally influenced, so depending on the tides there can be water right up to the river bank or 10 feet of mud between the river and the bank. There is a 500 foot carry from the parking lot to the water.

In good weather, beginners and/or rec boats can explore the Maryland shoreline, while intermediate/advanced kayakers with sea/touring kayaks can make the journey across to Colonial Breach in Virginia 5.5 miles away.

Safety Notes

1-2 foot drop from bank to water, with slick mud. footing can be precarious. Pleasure boats, power boats, cruisers and commercial ships on River, so keep head on a swivel.
