Point Reyes National Seashore - Drakes Estero

Trip Overview

Enjoyed it so much decided to paddle a second day in a row at Drake's Estero - launched from Schooner Bay near the old oyster cannery in the Phillip Burton Wilderness Area at Point Reyes National Seashore and paddled down the bay and around a point to Home Bay. Paddled up into Home Bay and a couple of the inlets including under a trail bridge and into a lagoon. Saw two families of otters, pelicans fishing, a flock of cormorants bathing in the shallows then marching single file up onto the beach, harbor seals and schools of leopard sharks. Met the mother and son of the family that used to ownthe oyster cannery at the landing before the park was established, interesting history. Unbelievable day!

Conditions

Drakes Estero is closed to motorized watercraft and is closed to all boating from March 1 through June 30 to protect harbor seals during pupping season.
