Trip Overview

Piney Run is a relatively small lake located in Carroll County, Maryland. It is probably most attractive to those looking for a 1-3 hour paddle close to Baltimore. As far as wildlife is concerned, there is a small population of ducks and Canada Geese, along with some turtles. My personal opinion is that it is best enjoyed during the week, as there tend to be large groups of people and loud parties near the put-in/take-out area on weekends. There is a launch fee for the lake, as there is for most bodies of water in Maryland. The county charges an entry fee for your vehicles, plus a launch fee for your boat.

Accommodations:

Picnic, bathroom, and boat launch facilities, plus bike and hiking trails.

Fees:

County residents: $4 per vehicle plus $3 per boat per day, or $25/vehicle and $25/boat per year (as of 2000). Not sure what the charge is for non-county residents.

Directions:

From Maryland route 26 on the west side of Eldersburg, take White Rock road south, then follow the signs to Piney Run.
