Trip Overview

On our most recent trip to the Outer Banks, my wife and I stayed in Avon and decided to take the little Otter SuperSports we brought with us, out on the Pamlico Sound. We launched from a Day Use Area just south of Salvo about halfway to Buxton.

The views we had on our paddle were spectacular. There were at least 3 dozen WindSurfers and another dozen or so KiteBoarders flying around the water on their boards. We also had a great view of the Hatteras Island Lighthouse on our paddle south toward Buxton.

Paddling the Pamlico Sound is extremely relaxing, and exhillrating at the same time. Even though the water is fairly shallow even a half mile or so off shore, it is fairly calm water and you feel as though you are paddling in the open ocean. My wife commented a few times that even though she could see the bottom (about 3 to 4 feet), it was a bit unnerving to be miles off shore in only her little 9.5 foot Otter.

I highly recommend taking your kayak with you to the Outer Banks, you will be rewarded with some of the most tranquil paddling experiences and wildlife viewing. We saw many species of fish, crab, birds and turtles on our paddle.
