Ogeechee River in Georgia

Trip Overview

I found myself, a first time kayak-er, pulled in by the siren song of the paddle one beautiful summer afternoon. My brother, who is an inflatable enthusiast, and I departed from the US Hwy 301 landing on the Ogeechee River. My truck was parked at the landing on GA Hwy 24 which by land is some 11 miles but I have no idea exactly how far by river but its much longer--that's for sure!!

This trip took about 6 hours of total paddling at a moderate pace. Many miles of this stretch are secluded and only very small sections had landings or human inhabitants. Human debris was at a minimum and most of the scenery was beautiful unspoiled countryside. Kayaks had to be stowed for a downed tree at one point only.

The nature of this river was variable from long stretches of wide glassy smooth water to sharp bends and amazingly fun cuts around brush!! Be prepared for isolation for a couple of hours at a time.

Overall this was a blast!! I'd never been on a boat of any type in my lifetime and I'm currently looking for a kayak and starting to plan trips!!!

Accommodations:

Very very little....bring your own

Fees:

None

Directions:

Best idea is to have a vehicle at both the Hwy 24 and Hwy 301 landings and follow the river downstream from 301 to 24. The 301 landing is located about 11-12 miles south of Sylvania on Hwy 301 North or about 9-10 miles North of Statesboro on the same highway.
