Trip Overview

My 11 year old son "A.J." & I went on his first kayaking adventure with his new kayak. This quiet creek empties at the Chickamauga Dam on the Tennessee River, which just so happened to be our "put in" point. With the GPS turned on we covered 2.75 miles each way. We turned around after a quick lunch at the Greenway Farm, this however is not the end of this creek. This is an easy paddle for even a small build 11 year old and I would feel any first timers could do it with ease.

This is just the lower portion of the north Chickamauga Creek area, it extends further north than the Greenway Farm area.

This creek had almost no current once away from the dam area and had few obstructions, all which were easily negotiated, while paddling we saw many fine homes and if a problem does arise help isn't too far away, this area has many people walking along its banks for almost 1/3rd of its length and the other sections has houses within sight.

I do not advise anyone to enter the Tennessee River below the dam when spilling water!!

Accommodations:

Any and all accommodations are available within a mile north of the Chickamauga Dam.

Fees:

None.

Directions:

From Chattanooga take I-75N to the 153 north exit. Take 153 north across the dam (6mi) and take the first right which circles back under the dam. Right in front of you at the light you will see the parking area.
