Nolin River in Kentucky

Trip Overview

Nolin River has several "family friendly" trips. My personal favorite is the Star Mills to White mills section. This is a 6.5-7.5 mile trip through private property. Although family friendly, the Nolin has several fun riffles and small rapids to play on. In my opinion it is the best canoe/ kayaking water in central Kentucky.

The put in spot is 300yds up stream from the partially collapsed dam at Star Mills. The dam is great for paddlers that are just beginning and want to taste waves and small white water. Throughout the trip there are several small riffles and rapids that keep the boredom down. There is no big rapids in this section but it has big fun for families and amateurs.

The take out is possible at the White Mills Christian Camp. There is a huge dam 100 yds down river from the take out that is extremely dangerous. Don't try it. I've heard a lot of stories about people nearly drowning and capsizing boats. The down fall to this trip is the last 2 miles is back water from the above mentioned dam. Extremely slow water from there to the take out.

Overall if you live in central Kentucky the trip is definitely worth it. This trip is possible year around with little difficulty.
