New River in Virginia

Trip Overview

Water was perfect with plenty of small rapids (mostly class 1 & 2's) The class 3 rapids, called Foster Falls, (just down river off I-77) were fairly easy but fun. We had to run them on the left due to a number of wading fishermen.

We had a very enjoyable trip and our Pungo's (120 & 140) did well in the rapids

Outfitting:

We used Blue Cat on the New Outfitters for our shuttle from their location (take out, just down river from VA Hwy 100 bridge near Draper, VA) to the launch site near Austinville, VA. They loaded our Pungos onto their truck and carried us to the launch site at the boat ramp on Virginia Hwy 636 (Store Hill Rd.) Austinville, VA.

Blue Cat on the New also has a campground at the river, which would make for a good base camp for a long weekend of play on the New River.

Fees:

Camping fees if camping.

Shuttle fee - dependent upon the distance of the shuttle, but ours was very reasonable as far as shuttle fees are concerned.

Directions:

From Charlotte, NC:

Turn left onto 100, travel north, go over the bridge, second right is the "Blue Cat on the New" (outfitters) sign, turn in and follow road to office.
