Trip Overview

The Navasota River just 8 miles east of College Station is a great place for an easy afternoon paddle. The river divides Grimes County from Brazos County, and the put in is right under the Hwy 30 bridge. There is limited parking, and it looks busy with people fishing on the weekends. Today the river gauge read 6, which seemed very low and is due to the drought, and the gauge goes up to 15. Upstream is blocked about 1/2 mile up with a huge tree down across the river, and downstream was easy flat paddling for the 3 miles that I went. The scenery is beautiful, and numerous turtles, fish, and frogs were sunning on the trees down in the river.
