Mono Lake

A self-supported trip created by Pertribe135

Trip Overview

Rented a tandem kayak at Mono Lake Kayak Rentals across Hwy 395 from Tioga Lodge. They supply wheels to transport the boat a relatively short distance to the water’s edge. We wanted to explore the north shore of the lake and this seemed the like the best option. Launched from the beach and paddled north to the inlet of Wilson Creek and then toward Black Point, just short of 10 miles round trip. Lots of shorebirds feasting on black flies at the water’s edge. The lake is a saline soda lake. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake and make its water alkaline. The water has a beautiful green color. We were going to paddle to some small islands near the north shore but we were warned the wind could come unexpectedly in the afternoon and make crossing the open water dangerous.
