Mendenhall Glacier Lake in Alaska

Trip Overview

"Above and Beyond" (Alaska outfitter) dropped us off with a laminated map of a self-guided 5 mile (round-trip) paddle to Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls. We had 3 hours on the water to explore the glacier, falls, arctic tern nesting sites and numerous icebergs floating by us.

There was only one other kayaker on the lake. Although the temp was around 50F, with clouds and drizzle, we were able to paddle 200 yards from the glacier (no closer due to calving) and within 100 feet of icebergs (due to flipping).

There was a small beach on the other side of the falls from the visitor center which we had to ourselves. Highly recommend this trip to paddlers.

Outfitting:

"Above and Beyond Alaska" picked us up at the cruise ship berth and transported us to Mendenhall Lake where they outfitted us with rain gear, boots, snack, water, sprayskirt and kayak with other necessary gear(water temp is 36F)

Fees:

Yes; I believe it's outfitter only accessible. We paid $110/person which is pricey but worth it - probably the best excursion in our 17 days in Alaska.

Directions:

Launch is about 20 minutes from downtown Juneau.

Resources:

"Above and Beyond" provided a laminated 5 mile route map of the lake to view the glacier, waterfall and icebergs.
