Trip Overview
Mayton Bridge is a great place to launch, using the concrete slope provided (can be slippery). Small carpark, but overflow spaces further over the bridge in a parking layby.
from this launching point, turning left will take you to coltishall. Roughly 2 miles on a paddleboard, with plenty of banks and mooring points along the way. Mostly trees and tall hedgerows. Lovely tree arches to paddle through, and little tunnels on the edges of the water created by willows. There's a nice walk along the entirety of the bank, all the way from Mayton to Coltishal.
just be mindful of fallen trees. There have been a lot fall recently, and although effort has clearly been seen to clear most of it, a lot has been left for wildlife to take over, and so the odd branch can be hidden just below the surface of the water, making it a particular nuisance for anything with a fin. We've had to "unhook" a couple of people from underwater branches! Don't be discouraged though...if you can pay attention to the water and avoid them (there are three fallen trees), it's well worth it!
Turning right from Mayton Bridge, will take you to Buxton Mill. About 1.5 miles. Beautiful scenery, low lying with the odd scattering of trees. Cow and sheep fields, geese, ducks and swans. Bit more of a view this way!
the river flows under the Bure Valley Railway bridge, and the local cows like to enter the river here, so be patient and quiet if you encounter them, just 'mooing' them out of the way slowly :)
Buxton Mill is a lovely place to stop at the end before turning back. It gets very shallow well before you reach the bank at the Mill, so keep this in mind if you have fins, as you may want to get your feet wet carrying your boards to shore rather than bending fins on the gravel bottom.
The entire river from Coltishal to Buxton never seemed to breach the 5-6ft depth marker on my paddle, with banks and moorings being knee-deep in places.
plenty of lovely fishing spots along the route.
