Massies Creek in Ohio

Trip Overview

I took my kayak down Massies Creek in Greene County on March 30. I put-in at Indian Mound Reserve (parking lot) off of U.S. 42 near Cedarville. There was a tree down soon after which was easily portaged right. In about two miles the creek narrows and there is a short stretch of Class II rapids with a partially submerged tree at the end of it. There was enough water to slide over the tree. I suggest a take-out left to scout the rapids before running it.

No further problems until after passing a covered bridge at Charleton Mill Rd. Soon after the bridge the creek splits in two around an island. The main channel to the right is blocked. Take the smaller left channel. Another tree down a half mile later portage left or duck under far right. As you approach Wilberforce-Clifton Rd., the creek bends left and there is a large logjam. Portage left.

Between Wilberforce-Clifton Rd. and Stevenson Rd. covered bridge there are two complete blockages. A while after Stevenson Rd. there is a partial block with small branches that I busted through. Then the creek splits in two around an island. Take out on the gravel bar and scout left. There is a partial block here with a fast current but can be run with skill. Soon after the two channels rejoin is the highlight of the trip: a Great Blue Heron nesting colony. I saw about 70 nests and 30 birds in tall sycamores. Another mile downstream is U.S. 68 and the end of my adventure.

Summary

A fun and challenging trip for the skilled boater. More suitable for a kayak as some situations require fast maneuvering. Indian Mound Reserve to U.S. 68 is about 8.5 miles and you make good time with the quick current. There is a USGS gage at Wilberforce. I recommend a gage depth of 3.7 to 4.7 ft. It is usually too shallow. One or two days after a good rain is the only time you can run it. You can also put-in take out at Wilberforce which is about half-way.
